famous restaurants in bucharest

Bucharest has a lot of diversity to offer, especially when it comes to food. You can have a great meal at some of the most famous restaurants around Bucharest and here we recommend the six most famous among them. So when you are done wandering through some of the top museums in Bucharest, take a lunch break at one of these places. Just order a taxi online from wherever in the city, and you’ll get yourself seated in no time.

Pâine si Vin

Pâine si Vin actually means “bread and wine”, a name very suitable having in mind the different selections of crusts (served similar to flat bread pizza) on the menu, with your choice of toppings sourced from local providers and a remarkable selection of wines. You can find Roma crust (traditional pizza style), Flemish, Mexican Ember, Bengalese (naan bread) and Scandinavian crust as well.

What we recommend, is the all-time favorite Mexican Ember crust topped with sour cream, sheep milk cheese, jalapeños, bacon, corn, red onion, chili flakes and dill. It may sound like an unusual combination of ingredients, however it is amazingly delicious. If you’re not feeling that adventurous, opt for the Bengalese crust, topped with hummus and spiced beef.

Gastronomika

The food at Gastronomika is some of the best in Bucharest. The restaurant looks gorgeous, and the atmosphere is a fine mix of cozy and upscale. The venue serves lunch, dinner, drinks and coffee, and provides catering for various events, or take out if you don’t feel like eating out. It is perfect for groups and guests with kids and the outdoor seating area is just perfect.

The owner of the venue is an amazing host and often keeps the restaurant open with wine flowing till late, in case there are groups having long dinner and a good time. He’s known as a person who never cuts anyone’s enjoyment. The food is unbelievably tasty and the staff is very friendly.

La Mama

Spread at multiple locations in Budapest, this chain has a well-deserved title as one of the best eateries in town. This restaurant (and its many locations) are even enjoyed and recommended by the locals, mainly because the food is traditional and very delicious. La Mama is a highly recommended starting point in your journey, in case you had never tried Romanian food before. They have menus available in English as well as Romanian, and the friendly staff will happily explain all menu items to you, make suggestions along the way.

We highly encourage you to order sarmale here. This dish is a classic Romanian dish, and the classical version is featuring minced pork stuffed inside sauerkraut leaves. Some other versions use grape leaves rather than cabbage, which give a distinct flavor to the dish. The sarmale dish is most commonly served with polenta (or mamaliga), cream and fatty bacon. It is one of the all-time favorite Romanian dishes.

Beca’s Kitchen

If you only have one afternoon for gastronomical enjoyment in Bucharest, our top recommendation would have to be Beca’s Kitchen. This is a small, yet very cozy restaurant, with a wooden and homey sitting area for all visitors. It is also featuring an ever changing menu made of whatever is fresh and seasonal at the moment. The owner, named Beca (obviously!), is a passionate foodie, and you can feel her excitement when you hear her explaining her menu and the seasonal changes.

The menu leans towards healthy options, but it does not focus on it completely. Her dishes made of fresh fish and locally sourced vegetables and vegan soups are so delicious, you’ll be convinced that they are loaded with butter. The menu is updated almost daily, so you can never go wrong if you take Beca’s advice and recommendation when placing your order. Beca’s Kitchen, with its inviting and delightful atmosphere, is complemented by a great staff, creating a truly memorable gastronomic experience.

Costelaria

Located and Strada Calea Rahovei, the Coetelaria literally means “rib place”. This restaurant is wildly popular for serving the best ribs dishes in all of Bucharest. The restaurant has an impressive menu composed of steak and fish dishes, however the dish they’re most known for is the ribs. You can go ahead and share a platter of beef, pork and lamb ribs, garnished with a side of homemade potato chips.

This is a unique restaurant serving high quality food, offering you the best culinary service. This venue comes with a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, where you can socialize with your friends while enjoying the quality at prices which are beyond reasonable. It is simply “a-can’t-miss place” for any meat eater visiting Bucharest.

El Torito

Consistently being the best Tex-Mex restaurant in Bucharest, in El Torito things are done properly and as expected - spicy, tasty and frills-free. Prepare yourself for the biggest and tastiest burritos in the city, topped with piles of tangy cheese, or sizzling hot fajitas, along with eight types of taco. On top of that, here you can also enjoy the often forgotten Mexican staple, cream of corn soup. You must try the super nachos here, filled with ground beef in a big portion, large enough to serve as a main course. All the portions here are supersized. And, the visit would not be complete if you don’t wash down this tasty food with some classic margaritas.

El Torito is guaranteed to satisfy your craving for Mexican food. The food is served by a very friendly staff and in a laid back, and yet lively atmosphere. Heading here for lunch is the greatest choice you can make.

When you’ll have enough of the top restaurants in Old Town Bucharest, try our fresh selection of the most famous ones. After such a treat, getting onto the airport bus and leaving Bucharest will not be an easy thing to do. Bon appetite!
